Traffic Restrictions Reintroduced During Oktoberfest Opening in Munich

The landlords' procession and the traditional costume and marksmen's parade are causing traffic disruptions in Munich on the first Wiesn weekend. An overview.

Munich – The Oktoberfest in Munich offers more than beer, chicken, and rides – tradition also has its place. Many people are already looking forward to the festive procession of the Wiesn landlords and the traditional costume and marksmen’s parade on the first weekend of the folk festival. However, this leads to road closures and traffic restrictions.

Road Closures and Traffic Restrictions on the First Wiesn Weekend in Munich – Due to Parades

The “O’zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!”) announcement by the mayor from the Schottenhamel festival tent at exactly 12 p.m. on September 20, 2025, is eagerly awaited by many. But before that, Dieter Reiter (SPD) naturally has to be brought there. This is done in a manner befitting his status, in a carriage accompanied by the landlords, showmen, marching bands, and other horse-drawn carriages. The procession is led by the Münchner Kindl, Franziska Inselkammer. According to forecasts, this Saturday could also be the hottest Wiesn day of all time.

The parade starts on Saturday at 10:35 a.m. behind the Sendlinger Tor gate. On Sonnenstraße, Josephspitalstraße, and Herzog-Wilhelm-Straße, traffic disruptions can occur as early as 8 a.m. due to preparations.

The procession route goes via Josephspitalstraße – Sonnenstraße – Schwanthalerstraße – Hermann-Lingg-Straße – St.-Pauls-Platz – Bavariaring to the Theresienwiese. Extensive no-stopping zones are in effect along the entire route. The landlords have only been processing together onto the Oktoberfest since 1935.
