Munich – Heavy car traffic, many cyclists, little space: this is Lindwurmstraße in Munich. Anyone planning to travel there by car or bicycle this weekend should take note: from Friday, August 22, until Sunday, August 24, the street will be completely closed to traffic. Only pedestrians will be allowed to pass during this time.
Construction Work on Lindwurmstraße in Munich
The project is expected to be especially welcome news for cyclists. According to the City of Munich, the Department of Public Works is redesigning Lindwurmstraße between Sendlinger-Tor-Platz and Goetheplatz to improve safety for both cyclists and pedestrians. “The existing paths for pedestrians and cyclists are too narrow given the high level of use.” For years, Lindwurmstraße has been a source of frustration for Munich’s cycling community.
Planned Changes
In the future, the bicycle lane will be moved onto the roadway and widened to between 2.5 and 3 meters. It will mostly run between tree trenches and parking spaces and will be protected by flexible bollards. Potential danger zones will additionally be highlighted in red.
One lane in each direction will remain for motor vehicles, and there will be dedicated turning lanes at intersections. Furthermore, designated loading zones will be created.
Full Closure of Lindwurmstraße During Construction
During the construction phase, parking spaces in the affected section will be removed. In addition, the street will remain closed to both cars and cyclists, with only pedestrians allowed to pass through.
According to Munich’s public utilities company (SWM), bus lines 62 and N45 will be diverted from Friday at around 7 p.m. until Monday at about 1 a.m.
For bus line 62 heading toward Ostbahnhof, the Stephansplatz stop will be relocated to Thalkirchner Straße before the junction with Reisingerstraße. In the direction of Rotkreuzplatz, the Sendlinger Tor stop will be moved to the main fire station opposite house number 14. The Stephansplatz stop will be shifted to the stop in the direction of Ostbahnhof.
Bus line N45 will not be able to serve the Sendlinger Tor stop when heading toward Goetheplatz. The Goetheplatz stop will be moved to Goethestraße before the junction with Mozartstraße. In the direction of Karlsplatz (Stachus), the Goetheplatz stop will be relocated to the line 58 stop toward Hauptbahnhof. The Sendlinger Tor stop will be canceled entirely.
