Volunteer Day in Munich Offers Hands-On Community Engagement Across City Districts

On Saturday, July 19, residents across Munich will have the chance to explore voluntary work through a diverse range of community activities in Pasing-Obermenzing and several central districts.

The city’s Volunteer Day invites participants to try out charitable initiatives and connect with local organizations — all without long-term commitments.

From creating flower meadows and restoring Christmas market stalls to cleaning commemorative Stolpersteine, joining a reading marathon, or playing bingo with drag queens, the event promises a wide selection of experiences. Activities are scheduled throughout Pasing-Obermenzing, Altstadt-Lehel, Maxvorstadt, and Isarvorstadt-Ludwigvorstadt between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

A Day of Open Doors for Civic Engagement

This open house for volunteering aims to provide firsthand insight into the work of social organizations and encourages people to get actively involved. “The focus is on hands-on participation. Residents can make a tangible contribution to their local environment,” said event initiator Sabine Bankauf. Organizer Anne Martini added, “They also get to meet the local associations behind these efforts.”

In Pasing-Obermenzing alone, around 20 organizations will host activities. Registration is available online. For example, the association Freunde alter Menschen will host a storytelling café at the Ebenböckvilla, where volunteers and elderly guests can share personal experiences. “The goal is to attract new volunteers to regularly visit older people and help counter loneliness,” explained Michaela Münz.

Volunteering Through Craft, Culture, and Music

The Hofkultur Pasing initiative is seeking help with trimming newly acquired stage components to size, a task that calls for some carpentry skills. “We’re hoping for helping hands with experience in woodworking,” said Ulla Wohlgeschaffen. The event also offers a chance to raise awareness about the cultural project based at Planegger Straße. “Many people still don’t know we exist, so we’re looking forward to fresh ideas and creative minds.”

The Zitherorchester München-Pasing, founded over a century ago, is also seizing the opportunity to become more visible. “Our orchestra has been around for 106 years, but we’re barely known publicly,” said chair Stefan Eckmüller. The Volunteer Day will be used for outreach and to find volunteers willing to assist elderly concertgoers with transport. Visitors to the ensemble’s performance at the Maria Schutz parish hall will even be invited to try out the instruments.

Hands-On Volunteerism in Central Munich

The city center is also offering a wide variety of activities, with 19 different initiatives planned across Altstadt-Lehel, Maxvorstadt, and Isarvorstadt-Ludwigvorstadt. Those interested can register in advance.

At the Bahnhofsmission, participants will be able to assist with a shift to gain insight into emergency services — from preparing tea and sandwiches to helping with basic care. “The goal is to let people experience what practical aid looks like,” explained Beate Zöttl.

The Alten- und Service-Zentrum Lehel (ASZ Lehel) is also opening its doors and recruiting volunteers to help prepare a flea market. “This is a direct way to experience what voluntary work involves,” said Carmen Standfuß. “It’s a great way to gain new perspectives, work together, and strengthen social bonds.”
