OpenAI Opens First German Office in Munich Amid High-Profile Launch Event

On Thursday evening, May 22, U.S. artificial intelligence company OpenAI officially launched its first office in Germany, choosing Munich as its new location.

While the exact address remains undisclosed, the event itself drew significant public attention and featured prominent figures from both the tech industry and German politics.

Office Location Remains Undisclosed, but Celebration Draws High-Level Guests

Despite media inquiries, OpenAI declined to reveal the specific location of its Munich office. However, the company presented itself publicly at a celebratory event attended by high-ranking executives, including Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap and Product Lead Nick Turley, a Munich native. The Bavarian state government was also strongly represented, with Minister-President Markus Söder and Minister of Science and the Arts Markus Blume among the guests.

Söder Promotes Bavaria as Europe’s Leading Tech Hub

During his speech to approximately 200 invited guests, CSU leader Markus Söder emphasized Bavaria’s commitment to artificial intelligence and innovation. “We are powering and pushing without limits,” he said. Addressing OpenAI directly, Söder declared, “We are the Silicon Valley of Europe.”

OpenAI Highlights Munich’s Research and Tech Ecosystem

OpenAI cited Munich’s combination of world-class academic institutions and a robust tech and business environment as key reasons for choosing the Bavarian capital. “The city brings together cutting-edge research with a strong economic base,” the company stated when asked about its location choice.

Positive Reception as OpenAI Plans Further Expansion

The atmosphere at the launch event was upbeat and forward-looking. Professor Angela P. Schoellig, a robotics and AI expert from the Technical University of Munich, praised OpenAI’s decision, noting that it reflected the region’s strong innovative momentum. A developer from OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters added that Munich stood out as “the friendliest” venue compared to previous events in London and California.

With its new office, OpenAI aims to better address the needs of European and German users. The company plans to expand the site further and is currently recruiting additional professionals for the Munich location.
