The 66-year-old mayor suffered a double tendon tear in his right shoulder. After conservative treatments failed to bring relief, doctors concluded that surgery was the only viable option.
Reiter Cites Ongoing Pain and Ineffective Therapies
Speaking publicly about his health, Reiter explained: “I’ve been experiencing severe pain in my right shoulder for quite some time. Unfortunately, none of the treatments have helped. A recent medical examination finally confirmed the need for surgery.”
The procedure is set to take place early next week, with preparatory medical care beginning on Sunday. Doctors anticipate a recovery period of at least four weeks, during which Reiter will not be available for official engagements.
City Cancels All Appointments During Recovery Period
Due to the upcoming surgery, the city has cancelled all of the mayor’s planned appearances and meetings during his recovery. Reiter expressed his regret over the inconvenience caused: “I sincerely apologize to all organizers and institutions that were counting on my attendance and now have to make last-minute adjustments.”
The mayor’s office has not yet confirmed who will temporarily take over his responsibilities during his absence. Reiter has served as mayor of Munich since 2014 and is currently in his third term.
