Climber Falls 50 Meters on Grünstein Peak

A 52-year-old man fell approximately 50 meters on the Grünstein via ferrata and sustained serious injuries.

According to police, the accident occurred on Wednesday in the area above the Königssee in the Berchtesgadener Land district. The Austrian climber slipped in the area known as the “Quittenbameck” and fell down a steep gully. The severely injured man was ultimately transported to a hospital by helicopter.

One companion immediately descended to the injured man after the accident, while another promptly called emergency services. After receiving initial treatment from the Berchtesgaden mountain rescue team, the 52-year-old was flown to the valley by air ambulance and later transferred to the Salzburg trauma hospital. The companion who had descended to him also had to be evacuated by helicopter.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The Alpine Task Force of the Piding Border Police has taken over the inquiry. The rescue operation involved eight mountain rescue team members and two police mountain guides. According to the Bergerlebnis Berchtesgaden association, the via ferrata leading to the summit of Grünstein, which is approximately 1,300 meters high, is only suitable for experienced climbers who are sure-footed, have no issues with heights, and possess excellent physical condition.
